Families brave hot weather for Dell'Osso Farm opening weekend

The farm allows visitors to bring in their own water.

LATHROP, Calif. — Lathrop's longtime pumpkin patch and corn maze, Dell'Osso Family Farm, opened Friday, but for the venue's opening weekend, it felt more like summer than fall.

"We made sure to bring our canopied stroller, lots of water. We pre-packed some ice and our golf umbrella," said Erika Andraca, visiting with her husband and kid from San Leandro. "We were expecting (the heat) but it's just so fun, we came anyway."

Woodland resident Tara Anderson and her kids fall in the same boat.

"It does not feel like fall yet, but we're looking forward to it cooling off," Anderson said. "So just staying hydrated and I got my neck fan."

At the farm's main bakery, bottles of water and cups of cold apple cider have been just as popular as the seasonal camel apples and apple spice doughnuts. The cold cider sold out in just one day.

"The heat is almost like rain. It's like a big impact on attendance," said farm co-owner Susan Dell'Osso. "We've seen a lot of people come later in the day."

Dell'Osso Family Farm allows visitors to bring their own water into the venue. For those who forget their water at home, the farm sells bottles and offers plenty of alternatives like shaved ice, ice cream, craft beer, wine and soda.

"Wear sunscreen, drink a lot of water. We have water everywhere," Dell'Osso said. "Try to stay in the shade. The shade is just beautiful, and the breeze really has been lovely, so it cools things off all the time."

Overall, the scorching sun couldn't stop the fun at Dell'Osso Family Farm.

"This weekend is absolutely perfect," Dell'Osso said. "As we get later in the month, it gets busier and busier."
