Lodi clock store prepares for end of daylight saving time

The large, landmark clock outside of the School Street business will be changed Saturday night.

LODI, Calif. — With the clock ticking toward the end of daylight saving time, one Lodi business is working ahead, preparing to "fall back."

There are hundreds of clocks of every style, color and size and in every direction inside the House of Clocks on School Street.

Fortunately for the Hohn family who owns the 53-year-old store, only a few dozen clocks need to be changed before Sunday and most of them are simple.

"On a mechanical clock for daylight saving when we go backward, the easiest is to stop the pendulum and let time catch up that hour and then start that back up," said Sandy Hohn, adding that moving a clock's arms could cause issues with chimes. "It's not as crazy as you think."

For some battery-operated analog clock owners, things could turn crazy if proper maintenance is not done timely, Hohn says.

"We suggest you change batteries twice per year, so daylight saving is a good monitor," said Hohn. "When you take the batteries out, again, just let that hour go by and put the batteries back in."

If a clock sustains damage from corroded batteries, Hohn says her family knows how to fix it.

Changing the time on clocks that have been sent in for repairs will be the Hohn family's main work job before Sunday, as many of the in-store clocks are purposely set to the wrong time to allow customers to hear the chimes.

"Repairs that we have in the back of the shop, we can stop those and set it for people if they haven't picked up yet," said Hohn. "We're just happy to help however we can."

As for the landmark large clock on the outside of the Lodi shop, the Hohn family plans to do the same thing as many other families: set it back one hour Saturday night.
