Fix Hwy. 50 project in next phase, to cause delays, changes to commutes

Here are the changes you can expect along the highway.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Fix 50 project in Sacramento County is now 85% complete. You've likely seen the work happening between downtown and Watt Avenue.

Last week, a new traffic split was in effect between the 5th to 18th Street undercrossings. Dennis Keaton, spokesperson with Caltrans, says it was removed Friday. He says it's important to drive carefully through work zones even though the split is gone.

Right now, there are no traffic splits on the eastbound side of the freeway through the work zone, but three traffic shifts are still in effect on the westbound side.

Keaton says the splits between Watt and 65th, as well as from 65th to Stockton Boulevard, will be there through June 2024. The one between 26th Street and Interstate 5 will be there through July 2024.

Below are segments of the project area:

  • Segment 1 - I-5 to 26th Street undercrossing
  • Segment 2 - 26th to Stockton Boulevard undercrossing
  • Segment 3 - Stockton to 65th Street overcrossing
  • Segment 4 - 65th Street to Howe Avenue
  • Segment 5 - Howe Avenue to the east of Watt Avenue

Keaton says there will be a westbound split in Segment 4 in late summer 2024 and then eastbound splits in 2025 in the same area. Additionally, next winter, a westbound split will happen in Segment 2. In 2025, expect eastbound splits there as well.

Keaton says the dates are subject to change.
