A 54-year-old inmate died in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail on Friday, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
Department spokesman Shaun Hampton said a deputy conducting an hourly cell check noticed the victim asleep on the floor at approximately 4:15 a.m. on Friday. The deputy directed the victim to lay on his bunk, which he did. Later, at approximately 5:15 a.m. the deputy returned to the cell to conduct another check on the victim and found him unresponsive.
Deputies immediately summoned jail medical staff. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The Department said that it will undergo an inmate death investigation, in accordance with department procedures and state laws.
The Coroner's Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
