FOLSOM, Calif. — Intel Corp. permanently laid off almost 2,000 employees at California offices in the span of a year.
The semiconductor company laid off 235 employees from its Folsom campus and 76 employees from Santa Clara offices on New Year’s Eve, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices given to the California Employment Development Department (EDD) by Intel spokesman Marc Nadler in November.
Intel spokeswoman Addy Burr said the layoffs come as the company is working to accelerate its strategy while reducing costs through multiple initiatives. Some business and function-specific positions are being cut as a result.
"(We) continue to invest in areas core to our business, including our U.S.-based manufacturing operations, to ensure we are well-positioned for long-term growth," Burr said.
Burr said Intel still employs over 13,000 people in California, only 500 less than the over 13,500 the company employed in California as of January 2022, according to Intel's website.
"These are difficult decisions, and we are committed to treating impacted employees with dignity and respect," Burr said.
Employees are notified of the layoffs at least 60 days before, Nadler wrote to the EDD.
In total, Intel Corp. laid off 1,915 employees from December 2022 to December 2023, including 898 employees from its Folsom campus and 1,017 employees in the Bay Area, according to EDD data.
ABC10 previously reported in one instance of mass layoffs, the positions being cut were mostly made up of different software development engineer titles.
