Deputies ultimately used an underwater robot to find the car, which then led to divers finding the driver dead.

LAKE DON PEDRO, Calif. — One person died in an accident at Lake Don Pedro early Wednesday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around midnight. Police said 64-year-old Donald Baker, of Modesto, drove to the Flemming Meadows Boat Ramp area in his 2015 Kia sedan.

Once he got there, he backed his vehicle down an embankment toward the water line when it suddenly accelerated backward and into the water. He called 911 for help while the car was in the water.

Police responded to the area with a boat enforcement unit, dive team and additional help from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies ultimately used an underwater robot to find the car, which then led to divers finding the driver dead.

The circumstances surrounding the accident aren't clear at this time, and police don't know if alcohol or drugs are a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
