Latest update on I-80 and Highway 50 construction near Davis, Sacramento

The Fix 50 project and the Yolo I-80 rehabilitation projects continue to impact daily commutes.

SACRAMENTO, California — Two large projects are happening in Sacramento and Yolo counties.

If you've driven between West Sacramento and Davis, you've likely seen work as part of the Yolo I-80 Pavement Rehabilitation project. From Watt Avenue to I-5, work is still being done on Highway 50. The Fix 50 project is about 76% complete, according to the project webpage.

District 3 Caltrans spokesperson Dennis Keaton says the I-80 pavement rehab project that started earlier this summer is on schedule, and there's work happening overnight and during the daytime, usually Sunday through Thursday.

"Usually you’ll have less construction going on during the weekend unless there’s special circumstances when they need to catch up, especially this time of year when you've got more rainfall happening and cooler temperatures, so that could push work back an extra day or two," said Keaton.

He says there will be demolition work and concrete being broken up for the lane rehabilitation. People can expect the heaviest traffic and delays during construction near the Yolo Causeway, a place he says already experiences traffic.

Along Highway 50, traffic splits are still in place in the westbound lanes. Additionally, there is an off-ramp closure at 10th Street.

"What we try to stress is that the longest part of this work – again – is the actual pavement work because they’re not just surface materials being removed, we’re going two feet into the ground, they’re redoing all of these lanes. They're also redoing structures where they have to fill in the median for those extra HOV lanes that are going to be used," said Keaton.

Keaton says sound walls along the highway are done, as well as the area underneath the WX section of the freeway that runs parallel to Broadway. He says there is some drainage and electrical work still to be finished.

According to Keaton, there are too many distracted and speeding drivers and fast drivers putting themselves and others in danger in work zones. He urges the traveling public to drive carefully.
