Commercial firework was modified into pipe bomb at North Highlands recycling center, deputies say

The live bomb was disarmed and no one was injured.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office responds Monday, June 17, 2024, to a call about a suspected pipe bomb at a recycling center on Watt Avenue.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after someone left a bomb at a recycling center in North Highlands Monday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, an employee at a recycling center on Watt Avenue called 911 to report a suspicious device. Employees, vehicles and people in a neighboring lot were evacuated.

Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD) detectives determined the device was live but was unstable. They performed a controlled detonation and cleared the scene.

Detectives say the device was a commercial firework that had been modified to be a pipe bomb.

They’re now trying to figure out who left it outside the building and why. Anyone with information can call investigators at 916-874-5115.
