Man arrested after deadly shooting at Lodi fruit packing plant

The sheriff's office says the man killed in the shooting was a plant employee. The motive is still under investigation.

LODI, Calif. — A Lodi man was arrested late Tuesday night on suspicion of murder after a deadly shooting.

According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting was reported around 10 p.m. Monday at the Rivermaid Trading Company on E Pine Street in Lodi.

Upon arrival, deputies found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, 27-year-old Jorge Bejar of Lodi, died at the scene. The sheriff's office confirmed to ABC10 that Bejar was a Rivermaid employee.

The sheriff’s office says detectives determined 41-year-old Gabriel Hernandez was the suspect.

The Manteca Police Department spotted the suspect vehicle around 11 p.m. Tuesday and the officer followed it until backup arrived. Police tried to stop the vehicle and Hernandez ended up running away.

Hernandez was arrested after a search involving the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.

He was booked Wednesday morning on suspicion of murder and two gun charges.
