SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Police are going on the record about their new Public Service Announcement. They’re partnering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to highlight the stories of DUI victims this holiday season.
“So you’ll see some videos that are coming out on our social media platform shared with MADD as well that are really trying to highlight the impacts, and the dangerousness of driving under the influence,” said Anthony Gamble with the Sacramento Police Department. “Our number one goal is to reduce the prevalence of DUI driving in our city.”
The story of Rhonda Campbell’s sister, Irene, is one of four local stories highlighted in the social media campaign.
“The night that Irene was killed. She was with a family friend,” said Campbell “Unfortunately, on their way home a repeat offender ran a stop sign and hit the car she was in head-on. The impact killed my friend's mother instantly and at that point in time my baby sister was on the side of the highway alone, dying.”
MADD says each year, more than 11,000 people die in drunk driving crashes, with the holiday season being especially dangerous.
“We’re not immune to it, and we want to do everything in our power to address this issue and try to reduce it as much as possible,” said Gamble.
And when you consider that the average drunk driver will drive impaired 80 times before being caught once MADD is partnering with law enforcement to try and bring those numbers down.
“Just understand that you will see officers on the roadway, and if we do see signs of impairment you can expect to get stopped, and you can expect to have a DUI investigation conducted,” said Gamble.
The maximum enforcement period runs throughout the holiday weekend.
