TOOELE COUNTY, Utah — A Sacramento man was killed Saturday after being hit by a car in Utah.
According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, it happened around 9 a.m. on eastbound I-80 in Tooele County.
The Utah DPS says a Mercedes Sprinter van pulling a trailer was pulled over on the right shoulder of the interstate and the driver of the van was standing outside the vehicle.
A Hyundai Elantra came up in the right lane and hit the trailer before hitting the driver of the Sprinter van. The driver of the van, 35-year-old Maksym Verchirko of Sacramento, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
KSL Newsradio in Utah reports the driver of the Elantra, 43-year-old Shelby Secrist, was charged Monday with DUI, marijuana possession and negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death.
A GoFundMe page for Verchirko’s family says he was delivering fruit when the accident happened. He leaves behind his pregnant wife and seven children.
