Man accused of sparking dumpster fire, swinging knife at officer in Ceres

The suspect was on felony probation with several outstanding warrants at the time of the incident, according to police.

CERES, Calif. — A man is behind bars after allegedly sparking a large dumpster fire and swinging a knife at an officer in Ceres Tuesday.

The Ceres Police Department said Carlos Gallegos, 45, was arrested and booked into the county jail on suspicion of arson, assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, possession of a dirk or dagger and resisting arrest.

Police tried to detain Gallegos after they responded to a dumpster fire behind the Denny's on Herndon Road. He was found in the area, but police said he swung a knife at an officer during the arrest and ran across Highway 99 to get away.

After a long search, police found Gallegos along the 1400 block of Herndon Road and used a taser to catch him. Police said the knife was also found on him.

Gallegos was on felony probation with several outstanding felony warrants at the time of the incident, according to police.

Neither the officers or suspect were hurt during the incident.
