Man arrested, accused of shooting and killing neighbor’s dog in Grass Valley

Deputies said there is no indication the man was under attack or in danger at the time of the shooting. A witness said the dog was not aggressive.

GRASS VALLEY, Calif — A man was arrested on suspicion of shooting and killing his neighbor's dog Monday in Grass Valley.

Kevin Barber, 52, allegedly killed a dog with a shotgun around 10:20 a.m. on his property along Brooks Road, according to a news release from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said a witness called 911 and reported it.

“The investigation thus far has revealed no indication that Barber was under attack or in imminent danger at the time of the shooting incident,” deputies wrote in the press release. “The witness also noted the dog was not acting aggressively.”

The dog was later determined to belong to a neighbor in the community, law enforcement said.

Barber allegedly fled his home and was intercepted by animal control deputies down the street, authorities said. He was booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on Monday and faces a charge related to intentionally killing a living animal, according to deputies and jail records.

Deputies reportedly obtained a search warrant for his property and seized a shotgun, a spent shell casing and an unspent shell casing for evidence.

The dog will undergo a necropsy, and deputies ask any potential witnesses to submit tips at their website or by calling 530-265-1471. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
