STOCKTON, Calif. — A man accused of killing his girlfriend, stabbing her mother and putting their 6-week-old child at risk three years ago in Stockton has been convicted of murder, the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.
According to law enforcement, in fall 2021 D'Angelo Dijon Webb strangled and stabbed his girlfriend, 24-year-old Brandi Hornsby, approximately 30 times then put her body in a suitcase with a plan to bury her. It was determined she had been dead inside the house for at least three days.
On Oct. 1, 2021, Brandi's mother, Tonya, went to check on her at Webb’s house after being unable to contact her, the DA’s office said. She received no response at the door and broke a window to get in.
At that point, Webb opened a door and allowed her in, but as she looked for her daughter Webb attacked her, strangled her into unconsciousness, dragged her into the garage and stabbed her in the neck multiple times with a knife, the DA’s office said.
Hornsby’s brother arrived, saw the stabbing and broke the front door to get in, according to law enforcement. Webb confronted him with a knife but ultimately ran away with his and Hornsby’s 6-week-old baby who had been left on the sofa and was present for the crimes.
Webb stole Hornsby’s mother’s car to escape, and the baby was in his negligent care for days, the DA’s office said. He later dropped off the child at another family member's home, ABC10 previously reported.
Taking Webb into custody
Webb was later arrested in Contra Costa County.
A tip led Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputies to a house about one hour west of Stockton and an hourslong standoff with Webb, ABC10 previously reported.
Deputies reportedly evacuated everyone inside the home, including some of Webb’s family members, before bringing in negotiators.
“They would tell him things like, ‘I know you’re scared. We don’t want to hurt you,’” said Alejandra Rodriguez, who saw the standoff firsthand. “It sounds like they also brought the suspect’s dad. He was outside speaking to him. They went pretty far to make sure that he surrendered safely.”
Rodriguez said she was instructed to stay inside after Webb told authorities he was armed.
Law enforcement told ABC10 Webb chose to surrender after five hours.
“This case is a chilling reminder of the evil some are capable of, but it is also a testament to the courage of Brandi’s family and the determined pursuit of justice by law enforcement and prosecutors,” said San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas. “We will not stop until every victim and family get the justice they deserve.”
