Man convicted of murder after Auburn woman's fentanyl death

25-year-old Aaron Dare is set to be sentenced Feb. 29, 2024.

AUBURN, Calif. — A Fair Oaks man was convicted of murder Thursday after a woman’s Aug. 2022 fentanyl death.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Aaron Dare was convicted of second-degree murder after a Placer Special Investigations Unit.

Dare is set to be sentenced Feb. 29, 2024 at the Historic Courthouse in Auburn.

The charges were initially filed in Oct. 2022 after the Auburn woman’s Aug. 2022 overdose death. At the time prosecutors said Dare was the one who sold the fentanyl to the woman.

Why is fentanyl so dangerous?

According to the CDC, from April 2020 to April 2021, more than 100,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States, which is an increase of around 28% from the same period the prior year.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50-100x stronger than morphine, according to the CDC. Most of the recent cases of fentanyl overdoses are linked to illicitly manufactured fentanyl as opposed to pharmaceutical fentanyl.
