Man in custody after multi-county chase from Linda to Sacramento

Deputies say it all started with a reported burglary at his ex-girlfriend's house.

MARYSVILLE, Calif. — A man accused of burglarizing his ex-girlfriend’s home early Thursday morning was hospitalized with injuries from a dog bite after a multi-county chase ended in Sacramento.

According to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, it began around 1:20 a.m. when deputies responded to a home on Swaisy Drive in Linda for a burglary.

Upon arrival, deputies met with a woman who said her ex-boyfriend broke the glass on the back door to get in but left before they arrived. She then pointed out that the suspect, 52-year-old Tawn Saephan of Sacramento, was coming back to the house in a Toyota Camry.

The sheriff’s office says Saephan saw deputies and drove off, starting a chase.

They deployed a spike strip, damaging the vehicle, but the chase didn’t stop and Saephan continued south on Highway 70 at speeds around 90 mph.

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office then joined the chase and put out a second spike strip at Highway 99 and Howsley Road, which deflated Saephan’s tires. Still, the chase continued down the highway and the California Highway Patrol joined in Natomas before the Sacramento Police Department joined at Highway 99 and Richards Boulevard.

The chase ended on 34th Street near the Highway 50 on-ramp, but deputies say Saephan got out of the car and started running. Sacramento police deployed a canine officer, which injured Saephan and he was taken to UC Davis for his injuries.

The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office says he will be booked into the Yuba County jail after he’s released from the hospital. He will face charges ranging from stalking and burglary to pursuit and assaulting a police canine.

The sheriff’s office says the chase lasted nearly an hour and spanned 45 miles.
