SALIDA, Calif. — A 26-year-old man died Tuesday while trying to save a family member from drowning in the Stanislaus River near Salida.
According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office, six friends and family members were near the river when one went in and had difficulty swimming.
The deceased, identified as 26-year-old Marcos Garcia, jumped in to save them. Additional friends and family jumped in, and two of them saved everyone but Garcia.
He was seen going underwater and didn’t resurface. He was found unresponsive in the water.
A deputy jumped in to recover the victim and he was pronounced dead.
There have now been at least eight drownings in Stanislaus County waterways since the start of the year.
