Man sentenced for DUI crash that killed Lindhurst High School assistant football coach

Prosecutors say he had three prior convictions for DUI when he pleaded guilty to DUI and murder in August.

YUBA COUNTY, Calif. — The man who killed a Lindhurst High School assistant football coach in a DUI crash was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison this week.

According to the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office, a judge sentenced Larry Lee Anderson Jr. Wednesday after he previously pleaded guilty to the murder of 34-year-old Shane Bunn.

The district attorney's office says Bunn’s wife and daughter gave impact statements where they described having to celebrate birthdays and Father’s Day at the cemetery rather than spending it with Bunn. Anderson then apologized to the family.

CASE HISTORY

Prosecutors say Shane Bunn was driving south on Feather River Boulevard in Feb. 2024 when he tried to pass a slow-moving vehicle. Anderson tried to pass Bunn and the other vehicle by driving between them at 103 mph.

Anderson clipped the other vehicle and went into the back of Bunn’s CRV, sending it into an irrigation canal.

Bunn died instantly while Anderson swerved, hit a third vehicle and rolled into a nearby orchard.

Anderson ran away from the scene and was found hours later. A blood test taken six hours after the crash showed a BAC of 0.16% — twice the legal limit.

Prosecutors say Anderson had three prior convictions for DUI when he pleaded guilty in August to DUI, hit-and-run and murder in connection with Bunn’s death.
