SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man was sentenced to 110 years-to-life in prison last week after leading officers on a chase and shooting at them in June 2021.
According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Sacramento police were in the area of 65th Street and Fruitridge Road on July 7, 2021, when they saw a vehicle that was reported stolen.
Officers tried to stop the driver, Ismael Herrera Mondello, but a chase began through a neighborhood. Prosecutors say Mondello fired a semiautomatic gun at officers during the chase and one of the bullets hit a nearby home.
Mondello hit a dead end and then broke into a home, leading to a standoff with police. Prosecutors say after several hours of no movement, Mondello began shooting at them from a vent in the attic that wasn’t visible to officers.
SWAT deployed tear gas and Mondello came out of the house. A search found two semiautomatic handguns and two 9mm handguns without serial numbers.
Mondello was convicted in May 2024 of five counts of attempted murder on a peace officer, seven counts of assault on a peace officer with a semiauto firearm, felony evasion, vehicle theft, three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and two counts of felon in possession of a firearm.
He was also suspected of stabbing an inmate in jail in January 2024.
