MANTECA, Calif. — A 13-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of online threats toward an elementary and high school in Manteca.

According to the Manteca Police Department, the teen targeted and threatened specific students at Sequoia Elementary School over Instagram and also mentioned a shooting at Manteca High School. Police said she didn't actually have the means to carry out the threat.

Sgt. Steve Beerman, police spokesperson, clarified the threats made by the teen were different from the school threats that have been part of a nationwide social media trend

Police said her threat listed the names of actual students at the elementary school and that she wanted to put fear into other students.

Her parents were ultimately contacted after she didn't attend school on Monday. Police said they cooperated with the investigation.

While not all the named victims were contacted by police, officials said they'll interview them as they are found.

The 13-year-old suspect was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of criminal threats and threatening a public officer.
