Fewer than 20 votes could decide whether Measure B passes in Grass Valley

Only 17 votes are separating the measure from passing or not based on the latest count.

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — Grass Valley residents have cast their votes and it's a close race to determine if Measure B will pass.

Measure B is a 0.375% sales tax to fund additional firefighters, vegetation management and emergency evacuation planning to reduce the risk of wildfires and extreme weather, according to Nevada County Election's Office.

Only 17 votes are separating the measure from passing or not based on the latest count. A spokesperson for Nevada County, Lisa Renner, said updated counts would be posted Tuesday, March 19 and Friday, March 22 around 4 p.m., but there are 125 voters in Nevada County who still need to correct their ballot. They are either missing a signature or have a signature that doesn't match the one on file.

Of those 125 voters, 13 voters on the Grass Valley measure have mismatched signatures that need to be corrected for their vote to count.

If passed, Measure B would raise $3.4 million annually and would be effective for seven years unless voters end it earlier, according to the elections office. There would be yearly audits and a citizen's oversight committee.

The latest election results were released Friday and stood at 2,134 voting for the sales tax and 2,117 votes against the tax. These are initial election results and haven't been certified. Renner said the voters who need to correct their ballots have been notified.

The 13 voters on the measure could correct their signatures or ignore it, according to Renner.

Renner said the election is on track to be certified on March 27. The last day county election officials have to certify the election is April 4, according to the California Secretary of State’s office.
