Michael Vick, Sac State meet about the school's head football coach job

The news about talks with Sacramento State came hours after reports he's also talking to Norfolk State University in his home state of Virginia.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Could former NFL player Michael Vick be headed to Sacramento? Well… there’s a chance.

Sacramento State University President Luke Wood said he's been talking to the former Pro Bowler about the job.

"Vick has expressed interest in the position, and yes, I did meet with him about his interest in Sac State football and our athletic rise," Wood posted to X.  "As you can imagine, given the success of our athletic programs that our football head coach job is an attractive role."

The Sac State Athletic Department released a statement Monday saying, "We have seen significant interest in the head coaching football position. The search process is ongoing, and no decisions have been made. We continue to have discussions with coaches across the country and a pool of qualified applicants are under consideration."

ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted Monday afternoon that Sacramento State had discussions with the former Pro-Bowl quarterback about being its next head coach.

News of talks with Sacramento State came hours after reports Vick is also talking to Norfolk State University about being its next head football coach.

Should he become Norfolk State’s next coach, it would mark a return to his home state of Virginia where he was a star quarterback at Warwick High School and then Virginia Tech.

The position at Sacramento State became vacant earlier in December when the school announced coach Andy Thompson was resigning from the role to “pursue other career opportunities” after two years in charge.

Thompson finished with a career record of 11-14.

Vick's Background

His pro career began with the Atlanta Falcons but was derailed for several seasons after he was convicted and sentenced to nearly two years in prison for running a dogfighting ring in Virginia. He would later return to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as brief stints with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since his playing career ended in 2017, Vick has worked in media, most recently for Fox Sports.

Regardless of where Vick ends up, he would join former NFL stars who became college coaches like Deion Sanders and Eddie George.
