Missing Oregon nurse found dead; neighbor arrested for murder

Beaverton Police said they arrested Melissa Jubane's neighbor on a murder charge after finding the body of the missing nurse.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Beaverton Police arrested a man Friday evening they said murdered a woman who had been reported missing.

Melissa Jubane had first been reported missing the morning of September 4 when she failed to show up for her shift as a nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

Her disappearance set off searches by friends and family, as well as a police investigation.

During that investigation, police said they determined that one of Jubane’s neighbors, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert, was involved in her disappearance.

Providence said Schubert has not been employed at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center but briefly was employed as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023.

Police said in a news release that they found Jubane’s remains and arrested Schubert on a charge of second-degree murder. They declined to release any more information about what happened leading up to Jubane’s death or the location Jubane's remains were found.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Melissa’s family, friends and coworkers,” a Beaverton Police spokesman said in a statement.

Oscar Cardenas told KGW that he met Jubane years ago while working at the Nike company store, when they were both students at the University of Portland. He described her as someone who “always wanted to help people and reach her goal of one day becoming a nurse.”

“Such a hard worker, such a sweetheart. A nurse is just the most selfless career ever,” Cardenas said Saturday.

They kept in touch over the years through Instagram.

“She has such a beautiful life and just great people around her. Every time she posted on Instagram, she was so happy. Just glowing,” Cardenas said.

Both settled down at the same apartment complex in Beaverton, off Southwest 160th Avenue and Baseline Road, where Melissa went missing on Sept. 4.

“This area of town is just so quiet and so calm and so safe. It’s just shocking that something like that would happen here,” Cardenas said. “I can’t even wrap my head around it; it’s just so heartbreaking that it would happen here. We’re just going to miss seeing her beautiful smile and how she would light up the energy around us.”

Dozens of friends and co-workers showed up at Jubane’s apartment complex off Southwest 160th Avenue in Beaverton to search for her throughout Friday.

"She's just a ball of joy," said Samantha Oregon, who helped organize the searches. "She was always happy, you know. Whenever I had rough days, she would bring me back."

Friends told KGW that Jubane had just gotten married.

Cardenas added, “It’s like how this is happening in my own backyard, my own apartment complex. It’s just terrifying, honestly. It’s scary that somebody could take away such a beautiful life, so young, too.”

A Providence spokesperson said hospital staff were heartbroken at the news of Jubane’s death.

“This comes as a shock to us all, and she is mourned by her co-workers. Melissa was an exceptional nurse, committed to our Providence Mission and daily demonstrating our values of compassion, excellence and integrity,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The Oregon Nurses Association also put out a statement expressing devastation and heartfelt condolences.

"The Oregon Nurses Association is devastated by the loss of Melissa Jubane, an extraordinary nurse at St. Vincents Hospital and a member of the Oregon Nurses Association. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of Melissa during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with our community in mourning and offer our full support to all those impacted by this devastating loss. ONA will continue to update our members about wats to support the family, and each other, as more information becomes available."

Police said tips related to this case are still welcome and to call 503-526-2280.

A GoFundMe has been started to support the family.
