SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Missing trees in an east Sacramento park prompted environmental preservationists to organize a replanting event Saturday — and they still need 30 to 35 volunteers.
East Sacramento Preservation co-founder Will Green says they'll replant 12 trees with the help of city staff and the Sacramento Tree Foundation.
"You have these beautiful majestic trees blown out by storms, dying of disease and the city has to clean them up but they don't replant them, so then you have this graveyard of torn down trees," Green said. "I reached out to the city and we started discussing this."
He got in touch with a city arborist and the Sacramento Tree Foundation to talk about planting new trees at McKinley Park. They will be replanted on the corner of Alhambra Boulevard & H Street outside Lake Kiesel.
Trees set to be replanted include Cashmere cypress, Cedrus deodara and Canary Island pine. They were donated by the Sacramento Tree Foundation.
Green says the trees will be planted with watering bags because the surface water won't be enough to keep the trees alive and healthy. Volunteers will also need to clear the hole with shovels provided by city staff before planting and staking the trees.
"We'll probably do another planting or two in a few months. There are a lot of trees that haven't been replaced yet," said Green.
