TUOLUMNE COUNTY, Calif. — A hiker missing for more than two weeks was found dead over the weekend, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Moore, 71, was last seen Friday, Aug. 16 when he filed for a wilderness permit for the Emigrant Wilderness.

His dog was found by hunters in the area the following day, and then his pack was found and reported to law enforcement on Monday, Aug. 19.

A search for Moore began after finding his vehicle at the Gianelli Trailhead but was suspended Aug. 26.

A follow-up search was conducted over Labor Day weekend, focused on areas near his pack and dog. Human remains detection dogs found his body in the search area around 2 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies say gear he packed indicated he intended to be in the wilderness for an extended time, and no circumstances of the incident pointed to foul play being involved.
