SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The man convicted of killing a Sacramento police officer has avoided the death penalty for now after a judge declared a mistrial in his sentencing due to a hung jury.
The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office said a jury was split 11-1 on the death penalty sentence for Adel Ramos, who was convicted of shooting and killing Tara O'Sullivan in 2019.
O'Sullivan was fatally shot while helping a woman gather her belongings during a domestic disturbance call in North Sacramento. She was 26 when she died.
The H Street Bridge in Sacramento was renamed in her honor in 2022.
There is a moratorium on executions in California, but convicted criminals can still be sentenced to death. The DA's office said told ABC10 it's evaluating its next steps, as prosecutors can re-try for the death penalty or pursue another sentence.
Ramos' next court hearing is Dec. 20.
