WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — This weekend marks the final Bay Bridge series game. That’s when the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants face off. Sunday is the last time the two teams will play each other at the Oakland Coliseum.
The A’s are headed to West Sacramento and Sutter Health Park for the next three years.
Sacramento native and former Major League Baseball player Leon Lee was the radio host for the River Cats when they were the A’s and is looking forward to seeing stadium upgrades.
“Nowadays, Major League Baseball players are so spoiled, so they have to have a lot of space in the locker room area where they can eat meals, take calls and media rooms,” Lee said.
ABC10 also spoke with Trevor May, who pitched for the A’s in 2023.
“There’s barely enough lockers, and I think someone was on the couch. I think someone didn’t actually have a locker, so that will have to be remedied,” May said.
He also spent five years in the minors and pitched as recently as last year in Sutter Health Park while he was rehabbing.
He said both parks are pitchers’ parks, with difficult winds to hit against.
“The Coliseum was a huge pitchers park anyways, so it the same thing. If anything, it probably plays a little more to the hitters advantage than the Coliseum. That’s tough. It’s tough to hit there, but in the two days I played there, no one could hit the warning track,” May said.
With the Battle of Bay, May said it’s the end of an era but also a bit comical.
“I believe the A’s were in that park (Sutter Health) for a while too, but it is, with the whole situation that’s going on and then this is happening, just the big league A’s team playing in the Triple A Giant’s Park. The internet memes write themselves for that one,” May said.
The Battle of Bay is Sunday at 1:07 p.m. at the Oakland Coliseum. It’s a sold out game.
