MODESTO, Calif. — A Modesto High School student was arrested in connection with social media threats toward schools.
The arrest follows a weekend of reported school threats that were posted to TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook, according to police. All of the reported threats appeared to be related to a statewide hoax or scam.
"These social media posts were investigated, and all though they appeared to be part of a statewide hoax or scam, the impact they had on our community was real leaving students and their families fearful and scared," police said on Facebook.
Police ultimately identified a Modesto High School student and accused him of posting one of the threats along with a picture of a gun.
The student was found by school staff, taken into custody and booked into juvenile hall on threat-related charges.
“We take all threats of school violence seriously and will continue to investigate these threats to ensure the safety of our community. We want to remind everyone to think before you post to social media, even if it is a so-called prank, as you will be found and arrested,” said Sgt. Jose Meza.
