MODESTO, Calif. — A Modesto philanthropist and former co-president of Gallo has died at 89 years old.
Company officials confirmed Robert Gallo died on June 22. He was described as a devoted family man.
“My uncle was a steward of the environment and industry,” said Ernest J. Gallo, chief executive officer for GALLO. “Because of his involvement and leadership, our business and industry are well positioned for the future. It’s due to his passion, that thousands of acres of land are preserved as wildlife habitats and a lasting foundation of philanthropy has been created to live on as his and Marie’s legacy.”
Robert Gallo oversaw the expansion of the the company's 50/50 give back program, which sets aside an acre of property for every acre planted in the North Coast Vineyard to help protect and enhance wildlife habitats. Gallo was among those at the front of addressing conservation issues and sustainable agriculture.
In a news release, the company said he was instrumental in helping the Aleutian Geese back from extinction and removing them from the endangered species list.
He was also behind the Gallo Glass Company, developed G3 Enterprises and was key in acquiring Louis M. Martini Winery and the Barefoot brand.
Gallo lived in Modesto until he died. He is survived by his seven children, 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
