Modesto looks to plan city development through 2050. Here are the highlights

There’s heavy consideration for the preservation of open space, and the plan aims to protect the community from noise and air pollution.

MODESTO, Calif. — Modesto looks toward its future.

Modesto 2050 is the city’s long-term general plan project, which aims to comprehensively update its environmental impact report and guide decisions about transportation, jobs, housing, parks and shopping over the next 26 years, the city said. Modesto currently conducts community workshops so residents may inform the project.

The last time the General Plan was given such a major update was in 1995, according to the city. Traditionally, cities update their General Plan every 20 years, and staff wanted to make sure Modesto’s was updated and current, according to Sonya Severo, a city spokeswoman.

Modesto 2050 focuses on housing provision issues and reportedly provides a strategy establishing goals, policies and programs to meet  current and future housing needs. It also describes plans for transportation networks, including pedestrian routes, bikes, rail, roads and the city-county airport.

The plan reportedly identifies goals and policies related to water facilities and service, parks, public schools, police, fire protection and waste. There’s also heavy consideration for the preservation of open space and the conservation, development and use of natural resources. It aims to protect the community from noise and air pollution.

Severo said Modesto’s population grew by 40,000 people between 1995 and 2024. The city anticipates its population will increase by another 42,000 people by 2050, she said.

Modesto is divided into six districts. Seven council members preside over its government, one for each district and a mayor. Land use workshops center around city districts.
