MODESTO, Calif. — A man was killed in a shooting early Wednesday morning in a west Modesto neighborhood, officials with the Modesto Police Department said.
Officers say they were called to the area of Monticello Lane, just south of West Hatch Road around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on reports that a man was shot.
First responders found the man inside a car with at least one gunshot wound, according to the Modesto Police Department. Medics took the man to the hospital where he died.
Detectives have not said whether they arrested the gunman and ask witnesses to contact them by emailing Grantj@modestopd.com or calling Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636.
"It was crazy"
For Ivan Rivera, who has lived in the west Modesto neighborhood for five years, the early morning violence right outside of his front door came as a shock.
"I heard like, over five (gunshots) and then I heard a car crashing and I came out and there was a car over on the field," said Rivera. "You could hear it very close; I thought it was something out of a movie."
Rivera spent much of Wednesday morning stuck inside his home, waiting for the police tape to come down in front of his door. He says his neighborhood is normally quiet, but believes that more police presence could be beneficial.
"It was crazy. I've been here for over five years, and I've never seen something like that," said Rivera. "There was a lot of police. They need more police patrol around these neighborhoods."
