MODESTO, Calif. — An elderly woman died in a house fire on Modesto Tuesday night and another man is in critical condition, said Modesto Fire Department officials.
Modesto and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire crews responded to a two-story residential working structure and found smoke coming out of the home.
Fire officials said they rescued an elderly woman inside the home, and found another elderly man outside suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
Both residents were taken to the hospital where the elderly woman was pronounced dead—the man remains in critical condition.
Firefighters said they were able to contain the fire damage to only the second floor of the home and investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
There was at least one working smoke detector in the home at the time of the fire, officials said.
