Modesto man, woman killed in head-on crash on Highway 99

Officers said a 22-year-old man from Modesto was driving a Hyundai the wrong way on Highway 99 going about 80-90 mph.

CALIFORNIA, USA — A Modesto man and a woman died in a crash Thursday in Merced County, according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP got reports of a wrong-way driver on southbound  Highway 99 around 4:15 a.m. Minutes later, CHP got reports of a crash along Highway 99 north of Westside Boulevard.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found one of the vehicles on fire.

Officers said a 22-year-old man from Modesto was driving a Hyundai the wrong way on Highway 99 going about 80-90 mph. A 43-year-old man from Modesto was driving a Chevy Tahoe with three passengers the correct way on the road going about 65 mph. Both vehicles collided head-on. 

The driver of the Hyundai died at the scene. It's not known if he was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. 

The Chevy Tahoe turned over onto the roof and caught fire. The driver and two passengers got out of the car before it caught fire. The 43-year-old driver from Modesto, a 19-year-old passenger from Mountain View and a 17-year-old passenger from Mountain View survived the crash, but a 35-year-old woman from Modesto died. 

The man driving the Chevy Tahoe wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to CHP. The identities of the people who died in the crash haven't been released.

The crash is under investigation.
