MODESTO, Calif. — A Modesto woman was arrested Saturday, accused of killing her own child, officers with the Modesto Police Department said.
According to police, officers were called to an apartment unit at the Crown Ridge Apartments in the 3900 block of Scenic Drive on reports of an assault around 12:48 p.m. Saturday.
Officers say they found a girl dead inside the apartment unit and a second child who was unharmed.
For the last three months, the Crown Ridge Apartments in Modesto have been home to Jasmine. It was the peace and quiet she was looking for.
"Neighbors mind their business. It's really quiet. It's really It's a quiet place," said Jasmine.
But on Saturday afternoon, Modesto Police officers made their presence known by responding to the 911 calls just doors down.
"I came out and I saw a lot of police and the SWAT truck. I just thought they're coming to you know, get somebody," said Jasmine.
Sunday afternoon, Modesto Police announced that 34-year-old Mina Nazari was arrested and charged with murder. Police say Nazari is also the mother of the young girl.
"Wow... you wouldn't think nothing like that. You know, it'd be really quiet and everybody's really nice," said Jasmine, reacting to learning about the homicide.
For Jasmine, knowing this happened so close to her new home has her concerned about who she's living next to.
"It's sad to know that somebody living that close to me could do something like, they got to really be careful. And to know it's the mother who did it, that makes it even more sad. Like, you know, you would never think that," said Jasmine.
Modesto Police are calling this a tragic event. As for Jasmine, she says she's going to be more cautious around her new neighborhood.
"It does make you question a lot, you know, because nobody wants to live next to nobody like that," said Jasmine.
This case is still under investigation and Modesto Police say there are no outstanding suspects at this time.
