MODESTO, Calif. — A probation officer was hit by a ricocheting bullet during a dog attack in Modesto Tuesday afternoon.
"Unfortunately, situations like this one underscore the dangers that Probation Officers throughout the State of California deal with on an everyday basis to ensure the public remains safe," said Stanislaus County Chief Probation Officer Mark Ferriera.
According to Ferriera, two probation officers tried to do a compliance check around 3:30 p.m. along the 1300 block of Imperial Avenue when a large dog tried to attack them as they walked up to the home.
Ferriera said one officer fired his gun in defense, ultimately wounding the dog, but the round ricocheted off the ground and hit the bottom of the other officer's foot.
The wounded officer was taken to a hospital for treatment, but he is expected to be OK.
The dog was left wound and taken away by animal control.
