SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento City Council will vote Tuesday night on the preliminary term sheet for the development of a soccer stadium and entertainment venue in the Railyards.
Last week’s announcement about the new soccer stadium is just a small part of the developments planned for the Railyards.
“There are numerous other retail opportunities within that (development) ranging from 200 to 2,000 square feet,” said Josh Leachman, the senior vice president of the Project Development Downtown Railyard Venture, LLC.
Also in the Railyards is the Wong Center, an affordable senior housing project, and Kaiser Permanente will build a hospital.
The Central Shop District will adapt the eight historic buildings from the Central Pacific Railroad Yard for retail space. The Alchemist, a public market, is also excited to be in the space.
Sam Greenlee, the executive director for Alchemist, is excited for the expansion.
“By 2027, our project Alchemist public market will be open. That will open 2026, we can also expect the soccer stadium to be open by then, the Dos Rios light rail station and, I believe, a 7th Street light rail station next to the stadium,” Greenlee said.
The food market area will be built with parks, a bike service station and a watch party area for games, but it’s also an opportunity for 60 local businesses.
“We have a food entrepreneurship training program. We work specifically with local, under resourced; our entire campus will be all local businesses, no chains,” Greenlee said.
A majority of the funding for the project comes from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Impact, and U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.
