GALT, CA - Hundreds of people turned out to honor slain Galt police Officer Kevin Tonnwith a candlelight vigil at Galt Community Park.

Tonn was shot and killed after responding to a burglary call Tuesday morning.

Many went to remember his commitment to serve and protect, a commitment that ultimately cost him his life.

"Kevin was probably one of the most funniest, and loving, and most stubborn people I have ever worked with," K9 handler Brian Niko said.

"We, as a community, has really lost a great soul," said friend Robin Gist.

Those who knew Tonn well, like Galt police dispatcher Sheri, described the emotional bond between Tonn and his dog.

"Kevin was a good man. He loved his dog. And his dog loved him," said Sheri. "I don't know how Yaro is going to grieve. I know he doesn't understand. Hearing him last night in the back of the police department just crying, was so hard."

Firefighters, K9 officers, police were all among the many people who turned out. Family and friends were also joined by people who didn't even know Tonn.

Those closest to Tonn said that his life was not lost in vain. They say that as a dedicated officer, he lived to serve.

"Kevin will be OK where he is. He's in a good place. Now, he'll watch over all of us forever," Gist said. "He would be smiling on all of us right now saying he did make a difference and he'd be very happy for that."
