SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Ronald Seay, 56, was arraigned in Sacramento County Court on Friday afternoon for the murder of librarian Amber Clark, 41.
Seay is suspected shooting the woman to death in the parking lot of the North Natomas Library, where Clark worked. The attack on December 11 set off lock downs and a frantic search for a suspect after shots were fired at the Natomas Center, an educational complex for a high school, college, and library.
Seay is facing a felony murder charge with a special circumstance, which makes a person if convicted, eligible for life in prison without parole or the death penalty. He is accused of the special circumstance known as lying in wait, which is added to a charge when a person is suspected of hiding or waiting for a person with the intent to do harm.
Clark’s husband, family, and colleagues sat in the court room on Friday.
Rivkah Sass is the director of the Sacramento Public Libraries. She says Clark was a fierce and passionate person who cared deeply about her work.
"We're all still in shock and today is really about the beginning of a very long process,” Sass said. “And right now our minds, thoughts and hearts are with Amber, and with her husband and family."
While few details have been made public about the case, Sacramento Police say the man was banned from the North Natomas Library on October 13.
The man allegedly caused a disturbance then, Police said. Clark was also working that evening.
Seay’s public defender requested bail and for media to be excluded from covering the case. Sacramento County Judge Michael Sweet denied both requests.
Seay did not enter a plea on Friday. Seay is expected back in court on December 27 at 8:30 a.m.
