Nevada City animal rescue operator arrested for animal cruelty after 34 dogs seized

Investigators seized a total of 34 dogs; two needed emergency veterinary care and one died from illness.

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif — The owner of a Nevada City animal rescue is facing accusations of animal cruelty after nearly three dozen dogs were seized over the weekend.

According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, 64-year-old Brady Fehr was arrested Sunday and booked on suspicion of 33 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and one county of felony animal cruelty.

The investigation began Oct. 1 when animal control was called about a person owning 60+ Husky-type dogs roaming around Banner Quaker Hill Road in Nevada City.

Officers went to the property and spoke with Fehr the next day.

Investigators say Fehr told them he owned and operated an animal rescue named ‘Mother Lode Husky Haven,’ and 47 dogs were his while 14 belonged to another rescue. Officers noticed violations and gave him a day to come into compliance.

Investigators say they came back the next day and noticed improvements, but one dog was seized due to illness.

Then, on Oct. 6, officers were told Fehr was involved in an accident two days earlier where several animals were hurt and one was killed.

A search warrant was executed at Fehr’s property and 33 adult dogs were seized. Two required emergency care and the one dog seized earlier died from illness.
