3rd person drowns in Nevada County in 26 hours

The most recent drowning happened Friday afternoon at Scott's Flat Lake.

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — For the third time 26 hours, Nevada County first responders were called to the scene of a drowning Friday afternoon.

According to the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, around 4:30 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to Scott's Flat Lake after someone went missing underwater

Rescuers found the person underwater and brought him or her to shore where they tried to perform CPR. The person was pronounced dead.

"These tragic incident incidents, you know, you don't want them to happen ever, but you know, are working with all of our partners and everything, we're able to mitigate them the best we can," said Josh Sunde, Nevada County Consolidated Fire District Battalion Chief. "Unfortunately, we had a end game that we didn't hope for."

The victim was identified Sunday by the Nevada County Coroner's Office as 29-year-old Juan Carlos Rangel-Avila, of Reno.

On Fourth of July, officials also responded to two other drownings in Nevada County. Around 2 p.m., 26-year-old Enrique Nieto-Hernandez, of Yuba City, drowned in the South Yuba River.

Around 3 p.m., a 24-year-old San Francisco man also drowned in the South Yuba River. His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.
