New affordable housing complex for seniors opens in Sacramento's Railyards District

The Wong Center has 150 units that are specifically for people who are considered low or very low income ages 55 and over.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A new affordable housing complex is now open is Sacramento's Railyards District. The Wong Center has 150 units that are specifically for people ages 55 and over, who are considered low or very low income.

"This has been such a good thing for me, especially from where I came from," said Martha Wagner, a Wong Center resident. "I was about to give up and I never did, and I am so glad that I didn't."

Interested tenants must meet income requirements to be eligible, making between 40 to 60 % of area median income. For instance for one person, that is between $30,000 to 45,000 per year.

The developer, Mutual Housing California, told ABC10 that depending on a tenant's income level, a one bedroom goes for between $723 to just over $1,100 per month. One bedrooms can house up to three people who meet income requirements. Two bedrooms are around $850 to $1,300 and can house up to five people.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said more work like this needs to be done.

"We had a 41 percent reduction in unsheltered homelessness so we're on the right track," Steinberg said. "But there's still too many seniors, too many people who need help."

As for the future, Mutual Housing said the complex is mandated to be affordable housing for at least 55 years.

The apartment is filled up, but they are accepting applications for a waitlist and will take in new tenants as units become available.

More affordable housing complexes are set to begin construction next year in Sacramento, including the Monarch, a property located at 8th and R streets and Sakura, a property located at 16th and T streets. Both are set to be ready for tenants around summer of 2027.
