Beat Battle Royale: 16 musicians face off in 'It's the New' Crush Congregation Beat Battle

The Crush Congregation Beat Battle is returning to the State Theatre of Modesto. Who will win the 16-man battle? The one who can make the freshest beat, of course.

MODESTO, Calif. — The Crush Congregation Beat Battle is returning to the State Theatre of Modesto, this time in partnership with the Modesto Artists Movement and with a slightly altered name.

The "It's the New" Crush Congregation Beat Battle will be held at 7 p.m. Sat, Nov 16.

ABC10's Mark S. Allen went down to the Queen Bean Coffee and Social House in Modesto for a sneak peek.

HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:

  1. This is a "beats" competition, not a beatboxing one. While some may confuse the two, the difference is vast. Beatboxing is the vocal imitation of percussion instruments, with the beatboxer often mimicking a drum machine. Meanwhile, beats are produced tracks typically meant to be used as the base for a song, also referred to as backing tracks.

"It is a music producer battle," explained Joseph Zimmerer, the founder of Crush Congregation and its music competition. "They're making beats."

  2. The goal of the Crush Congregation Beat Battle isn't just to provide the community with live music, but to also promote positive change and action in Modesto.

"Art is transformational," said Sam Pierstorff, Executive Director of the Modesto Artists Movement. "We are changing this community by bringing comedy, poetry, film, music and hip-hop."

  3. ABC10 photographer Don Henry is a beat maker and music producer! When he is not joining Mark in the field and on air, he's busy making music under the moniker DoomDaWiz. He'll be joining in on the competition Saturday night.
