New pavement project to impact traffic along I-5 near Natomas this weekend

The work will happen between Richards and Arena boulevards.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Construction is kicking off along I-5 this weekend and it'll cause potential traffic delays between Richards and Arena boulevards.

According to Caltrans, this work should wrap up by October.

Below are the closings from 10 p.m. Friday, June 21 through 5 a.m. Monday, June 24:

  • Richards Boulevard on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5 will be closed
  • Northbound Interstate 5 at Garden Highway will be down to two lanes
  • Southbound Interstate 5 at the Interstate 80 interchange will be down to two lanes.

Here is the detour provided by Caltrans:

"Continue westbound on Richards Boulevard and take southbound I-5, keep right and take the J Street off-ramp (EXIT 519B), stay left and continue to 5th Street, make a left at the signal onto I Street (stay in the far-right lane) and take the north I-5 on-ramp to Redding," said Dennis Keaton with Caltrans.

Keaton says the pavement needs to be replaced and the 55-hour closing makes conditions safer for workers and motorists traveling through the work zone. He says people could experience delays of up to 40 minutes in the worst-case scenario, so leave earlier to get to the Sacramento Airport this weekend.

"We recommend they try to leave 40 minutes earlier than normal, so add that to their travel time ... so that you're not stuck in traffic and you're not worried about making your flight or making your shift if you work at the airport," said Keaton.

Keaton says the work happening near the Sacramento International Airport is part of a different project, the I-5 Auxiliary Lanes project.

Another closing people need to be aware of this weekend is the Arena Boulevard loop on-ramp to southbound Interstate 5. This ramp will be closed for nine days, from 9 p.m. Thursday, June 20 through 9 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

Here is Caltrans' suggested alternate route:

"Motorists can continue westbound to Duckhorn Drive and make a U-turn to use the eastbound Arena Boulevard slip on-ramp to southbound I-5. Motorists can also use the Del Paso Road on-ramps as an alternate route for southbound I-5."
