New project along I-5 to improve interstate in San Joaquin County

Construction on the I-5 Anchor Pavement Rehabilitation and Improvement Project starts Friday, June 7.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif — Construction on the I-5 Pavement Anchor Project in San Joaquin County starts Friday, June 7. It'll fix up the interstate from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the Sacramento County line.

According to Caltrans, roughly 75,000 vehicles drive on I-5 between Hammer Lane and Eight Mile Road in Stockton daily, and another 66,000 from Eight Mile Road to the Sacramento County line.

Skip Allum, a spokesperson for Caltrans District 10, says it’s been years since this stretch had a dedicated project to improve the roadway.

"We’ve got a project now that can go ahead and not only repair the roadway surface but improve the shoulders as well, and also install some new traffic management elements. Things like replacing the overhead and roadside signage, including some new fiber optics and some other elements that help us manage traffic a little more safely through the area and make it more efficient for travelers," said Allum.

He says various on and off-ramps along the project area will get improvements, too. Allum says you can expect overnight lane closings for striping and K-rail installation, as well as a traffic shift.

The project is expected to be finished in September 2026.
