CINCINNATI — Jake Browning, Folsom native and a quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, is the likely choice for the team’s starting quarterback after an announcement Friday Joe Burrow will be out the rest of the season due to a torn ligament in his right wrist.
Browning, 27, played for Folsom High School and earlier in childhood with the school’s Junior Bulldogs program. While playing for the high school, he set California prep records with 1,708 career pass attempts, 1,191 completions, 16,755 passing yards and 229 touchdowns, according to ESPN.
Jonah Williams, an offensive tackle on the Bengals, was also Browning’s teammate at Folsom. They both graduated in 2015.
Browning set school records at the University of Washington and became a college free agent signee of the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, according to ESPN.
Bengals coach Zac Taylor said Burrow’s injury would require surgery. Burrow left Thursday night’s Bengals game in the second quarter of a 34-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
When Burrow tried practice throws on the sideline, the ball slipped out of his hand as the quarterback winced. Burrow then went to the locker room and looked frustrated.
This is the second time in Burrow’s four-year NFL career he's suffered a season-ending injury in Week 11. He tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee during a game against Washington in 2020.
Burrow was 11 for 17 for 101 yards and a touchdown when he left.
Cincinnati is 5-5 after two-straight losses. The NFL will investigate why Cincinnati did not list Burrow on the team’s injury report, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press Friday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the review is not being publicly discussed.
The Bengals posted and later deleted a video on social media showing Burrow getting off a team bus with his hand in what appeared to be a soft cast.
