Northern California woman accidentally bitten by police canine during search for suspect

Riddle said the pain traveled throughout her body after the canine bit her. She shared photos of bite marks on her stomach and bruises on her leg.

MARYSVILLE, Calif. — A Marysville woman is recovering after she said a Yuba County Sheriff’s Office canine accidentally bit her while chasing a possible homicide suspect.

“In my mind, it was a minute or two. The deputy was giving commands trying to pull the dog off, but the dog kept going,” said Myra Riddle, who suffered numerous dog bites.

The terrifying scene played out Friday afternoon just outside of Riddle’s Casa Del Este apartment in Marysville.

“I am still dealing with the pain. It is scary,” said Riddle.

Still shaken, Riddle said it happened fast, referring to it as a freak accident. She said she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I heard 'stop,' but I never heard 'canine,' never heard 'dog,'” said Riddle. “The kid came running by us and next thing, the police dog was right behind him. It stopped, looked at me and went for me.”

Riddle said the canine latched on as the pain traveled throughout her body. Riddle shared photos of bite marks on her stomach and bruises on her leg. Riddle said the sheriff’s deputy apologized for the incident.

The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were investigating a homicide in the area when a civilian was hurt from a dog bite. They did not release more information. Officials said they were investigating a recent shooting that happened a mile away. On Thursday night, a 19-year-old was shot and killed at Yuba Gardens Apartments.

A few hours after Riddle was bit, she was released from the hospital. She said she does not want the canine to be punished, but retraining might help. She wished the deputy had given a warning to the people living in the area before releasing the canine.

“It sounds weird, but I am glad the dog attacked me and not my partner because she has a pain pump in the same area,” said Riddle. “If the dog would have punctured that it could have killed her.”

The sheriff's office could not comment on if anyone was arrested during the chase at the Casa Del Este Apartments Friday afternoon but added two suspects were arrested the following day in Folsom in connection to the Yuba Gardens Apartments shooting.
