OAKDALE, Calif. — A parking enforcement matter at Woodward Reservoir led to large crowd of people turning their aggression toward deputies, officials said.
Sgt. Luke Schwartz, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, said it happened around 7:15 p.m. in the Office Point area.
He said a crowd formed and became unruly while deputies were handling parking enforcement they weren't directly involved in.
"They decided to insert themselves in the situation, became confrontational, argumentative with our deputies and actually physically interfered with us trying to safely conduct that parking enforcement," said Schwartz.
He said the crowd swelled to around 75 people, and at some point, the crowd turned their aggression toward deputies. He said a use-of-force situation followed after people weren't listening to instructions and were separated and detained.
"Our deputies had to use a minimal amount of less-than-lethal force to take control and we have several people that are in custody right now," said Schwartz.
Details surrounding the incident haven't been released at this time, but officials said alcohol played a factor. Officials said there were no reported injuries after the incident.
Eventually, the issue was settled and seven people were taken into custody. Six of them remain in custody after minor was cited and released to their parents. They face charges related to felony obstructing a peace officer and misdemeanor delay and obstruction.
