The California Department of Motor Vehicles is working around the clock restore services more than one hundred field offices after a catastrophic computer failure, officials said Wednesday.

The failure was the loss of hard disks in a primary and backup system, California DMV spokesman Artemio Armenta said in an e-mail.

Licensing and registration services were halted at 122 field offices Monday.

As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, 21 offices are back to normal, 17 are partially operational, according to the DMV Public Affairs Office. Partially operational offices can only process driver license and ID cards.

The DMV computers were not targeted or hacked according to DMV officials. There is no estimated time on when services will be restored.

The California DMV issued an apology for any inconvenience the outages have caused customers.

“The repairs to the system have taken longer than we anticipated,” the Wednesday DMV statement wrote. “While the IT repairs are nearly complete, work still needs to be done by field office staff to complete the process.”

Customers can still take drive tests, schedule appointments, do paperwork, and get questions answered during the outage.
