Padel courts coming soon to West Sacramento's Bridge District

The outdoor facility is set to include four courts adjacent to Sutter Health Park.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Padel courts are expected to come soon near the riverbank in West Sacramento.

Park Padel, a San Francisco-based company, is planning to open an outdoor facility this fall on 985 Riverfront Street, according to the company’s website.

The outdoor facility is set to feature four courts that are adjacent to Drake’s: The Barn, which is walking distance from Sutter Health Park, the Sacramento River Cat’s home ballpark and the soon-to-be temporary home for the Athletics.

The Bridge District is home to multiple apartment buildings, Franquette — a French-inspired wine bar and café — and Drake’s.

Park Padel offers premier and squad memberships, according to its website.

Premier memberships start at $100 per month for one person while squad memberships for five people are $50 monthly. Each membership requires a minimum of three months. Non-members can reserve courts for $40 an hour person.

Park Padel already has courts in San Francisco and are planning to open more in South San Francisco.

ABC10 reached out to Park Padel about the West Sacramento facility, but the inquiry was not immediately returned.

What is padel?

Padel is a racquet sport that combines the elements of tennis and squash and is played on an enclosed court that is roughly one-third the size of a tennis court. It is considered a fast-paced game and is typically played in doubles.

The game originated in Acapulco, Mexico and spread in popularity through Spanish-speaking countries.

The sport has nearly 30 million amateur players worldwide with more than half of them playing more than once per week, according to the International Padel Federation.

More than 59% of padel players are in Europe, followed by 23% in South America and 7% in Central and North America.
