OLIVEHURST, Calif. — A month ahead of schedule, the Salvation Army of Yuba-Sutter have opened up seven transitional homes for Camp Fire survivors heading into the holidays.
With construction on Hope Vista finished, their new goal is to find families for the seven homes by Christmastime.
The whole project has been part of the the Salvation Army's Long-Term Recovery Program that it offers to wildfire survivors.
The homes themselves are about 1,000 square feet, dedicated to the families that survived the Camp Fire. The 2018 wildfire burned the town of Paradise and much of the nearby community of Magalia to the ground and left 85 people dead.
Even a year later, the Salvation Army says there is still a demand for Camp Fire survivor housing. According to the Salvation Army, Hope Vista has the only transitional housing units in the region.
Homes will be reserved for Camp Fire survivors for 18 months. Afterward, they'll become available to others going through Salvation Army programs.
